General (ret.) Stanley A. McChrystal


A transformational leader with a remarkable record of achievement, General Stanley A. McChrystal was called “one of America’s greatest warriors” by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.  A retired four-star general, he is the former commander of U.S. and International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) Afghanistan and the former commander of the premier military counter-terrorism force, Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC).  He is best known for developing and implementing the current counter-insurgency strategy in Afghanistan, and for creating a comprehensive counter-terrorism organization that revolutionized the interagency operating culture. 

The son of Major General McChrystal, GEN McChrystal graduated from West Point in 1976 and joined the infantry.  He began his military career as a platoon commander in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  Over the course of his career, he held several leadership and staff positions in the Army Special Forces, Army Rangers, 82nd Airborne Division and the XVIII Army Airborne Corp and the Joint Staff.  He is a graduate of the US Naval War College and he completed fellowships at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government in 1997 and at the Council on Foreign Relations in 2000.

After 9/11 until his retirement in 2010, General McChrystal spent more than 7 years deployed to combat in a variety of leadership positions.  In 2002, he was the chief of staff for military operations in Afghanistan. A year later he was selected to deliver nationally televised Pentagon briefings about military operations in Iraq. From 2003 to 2008, McChrystal commanded JSOC where he led the US Military’s counter-terrorism efforts all over the world.  From the summer of 2008 until June of 2009, General McChrystal was the Director of the Joint Staff.  In June of 2009, the President of the United States and the Secretary General of NATO appointed General McChrystal to be the Commander of US Forces Afghanistan and NATO ISAF.   His command included more than 150,000 troops from 45 allied countries.  On August 1 of 2010 General McChrystal retired from the US Army.

General McChrystal is a senior fellow at Yale University’s Jackson Institute for Global Affairs where he teaches a course on Leadership in Operation.  He sits on the board of the Yellow Ribbon Fund, Navistar International Corporation and JetBlue.  He is also the Chairman of the Aspen Institute’s Franklin Project, dedicated to promoting national service initiatives among American youth.

General McChrystal co-founded the McChrystal Group in January of 2011 where he is currently a partner.  McChrystal Group’s mission is to deliver innovative leadership solutions to American businesses to help them transform and succeed in challenging and dynamic environments.

General McChrystal resides in Alexandria, Virginia with his wife of 35 years, Annie.

Jim Whitehurst is President and Chief Executive officer of Red Hat, the world’s leading provider of open source enterprise IT products and services.

With a background in business development, finance, and global operations, Whitehurst has proven expertise in helping companies flourish—even in the most challenging economic and business environments. He began his career in 1989 at The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in Chicago, Illinois, and held several corporate development leadership roles at the firm. Over the next decade, Whitehurst worked in BCG’s Hong Kong and Shanghai offices, and was a partner in their Atlanta office with numerous clients across a wide range of industries.

On September 11, 2001, Delta Air Lines asked Whitehurst to serve as their acting treasurer. That same week, he led the company’s secured debt offering, winning the Thomson-IVR “Deal of the Year” for reopening the capital markets. In 2002, he joined Delta full time as Senior Vice President–Finance, Treasury, and Business Development, and was promoted again in 2004 to Chief Network and Planning Officer—a position from which he drove significant international expansion. He was named Chief Operating Officer in 2005, overseeing all aspects of airline operations including sales, marketing, operations, and strategy.

In January, 2008, Whitehurst joined Red Hat as President and CEO. Since then, he has more than doubled the company’s revenue. He has led significant global expansion, opening development centers and sales offices around the world. Whitehurst is an advocate for open software as a catalyst for business innovation. Under his leadership, Red Hat was named to Forbes’ list of “The World’s Most Innovative Companies” in 2015, 2014, and 2012; added to Standard and Poor’s (S&P) 500 stock index in 2009; and named one of the best places to work by Glassdoor in 2016.

In June 2015, Whitehurst published a book with Harvard Business Review Press entitled "The Open Organization: Igniting Passion and Performance" showing how open principles of management—based on transparency, participation, and community—can help organizations navigate and succeed in a fast-paced connected era.

Whitehurst graduated from Rice University in Houston, Texas, in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and computer science. He also attended Fredrick Alexander University in Erlangen, Germany, and holds a General Course degree from the London School of Economics. He received his Masters in Business Administration from Harvard in 1994.

Whitehurst lives in Durham, N.C., with his wife, Lauren, and thirteen-year-old twins, Emma and Jack. He is a member of the Board of Directors of DigitalGlobe, Inc., Duke University Health System, and The Conservation Fund. He also sits on the executive committee of the North Carolina Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to being a highly sought after keynote speaker at major association, conference and educational events, Aubrey is the author of six best-selling books including: Bringing out the Best in People, Other People’s Habits, Measure of a Leader, Oops! 13 Management Practices that Waste Time and Money (and what to do instead), and Safe by Accident? His books have been translated into Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Spanish and French and have been licensed in China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Romania and Saudi Arabia.

Aubrey and his wife Rebecca reside in Atlanta and have two married daughters and three grandchildren.

Author of, Design to Grow: How Coca-Cola Learned to Combine Scale and Agility (and How You Can Too)

David is Vice President, Innovation and Entrepreneurship for the Coca-Cola Company. David leads a platform called Coca-Cola Founders, designed to co-create seed-stage startups by partnering Coca-Cola with a global network of experienced founders.

In 2004 David was named Coca-Cola’s first Vice President of Global Design where he led the Company’s vision and strategy for design. In 2009, Fast Company recognized David as a “Master of Design” and in 2013, he was included in Fortune Magazine’s “Executive Dream Team.”

Prior to joining Coca-Cola, David held a succession of roles in design, brand strategy and management consulting. In 1997, David Co-Founded a digital agency called Process1234.

David’s side project has been co-authoring, “Design to Grow: How Coca-Cola Learned to Combine Scale and Agility (and How You Can Too)” with Linda Tischler (Fast Company Senior Editor) which was released in February 2015.
